Installation Requirements for Office and Internet Explorer

Microsoft Office 2000 Premium resides on Office 2000 Premium Disc 1 and includes Microsoft Internet Explorer 5. The Office Setup program allows you to install both Office and Internet Explorer together, or you can use the Internet Explorer Setup program to install Internet Explorer separately. If you deploy Office or Internet Explorer with other Office-related products and components, keep in mind the following installation requirements.

Product Installation technology Elevated privileges Reboot
Office 2000 Windows installer Partial Yes
Internet Explorer 5 Active Setup Yes Yes

Office 2000

To install Office, run Setup.exe from the root folder of Office Disc 1. Using the /a command-line option, you can create an administrative installation point from which users can install Office over the network. You can then run Setup.exe from the root folder of the administrative installation point to install Office on users’ computers.

Software prerequisites

Some Office applications require that other software be preinstalled or preconfigured on the user’s computer before you install Office.

Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 3   Required by most Office applications under Microsoft Windows NT 4.0.

Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 4   Required by NetMeeting.

Internet Explorer 3.0 or later   Required by Microsoft Access, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, and Microsoft Word.

Internet Explorer 4.01 or later   Required by Microsoft Outlook.

Internet Explorer 5 or later   Required by NetMeeting.

Toolbox   You can find a complete list of the Office features that require Internet Explorer in the Internet Explorer 5 Dependent Features workbook (IE5Feats.xls). This workbook includes a description of how each feature behaves when the required version of Internet Explorer is not installed. For information about installing IE5Feats.xls, see Office Information.

Elevated privileges

To install Office on Windows NT 4.0, you must run Setup with elevated privileges. If Office Setup requires you to reboot the user's computer, then you must be logged on with elevated privileges both before and after reboot.

If you install Microsoft PhotoDraw 2000 with Office and you want to minimize the number of times you have to reboot the user's computer, you must install PhotoDraw first, install Office, and then reboot the computer. If you want to install PhotoDraw after Office, you must reboot the computer after you install Office and allow Office Setup to finish installation tasks before you install PhotoDraw.

Important   If you install Office before you install PhotoDraw, and you do not reboot the computer after installing Office and before installing PhotoDraw, then Office may not function correctly.

If your users run Outlook in a secure Windows NT environment that restricts user access to the Windows registry, you must specify the Outlook configuration type in a transform because users cannot select or change this configuration. In the Customize Outlook Installation Options panel of the Custom Installation Wizard, select and configure either Corporate and Workgroup Settings or Internet Only Settings.

Tip   You can enable Outlook encryption features even if the user installs Office without elevated privileges. Just install the Outlook 2000 Domestic Security Patch with elevated privileges before the user installs Office.

Reboot requirements

Office Setup requires you to reboot the computer if you install Internet Explorer 5, or if Setup needs to update system files that are in use during installation. If Setup requires you to reboot the computer, then you must log on again using the same account so that Setup can finish the installation.

Internet Explorer 5

To install Internet Explorer separately from Office, run IE5Setup.exe from the IE5 folder of Office Disc 1. If you perform an administrative installation of Office, you can also find IE5Setup.exe in the IE5 folder in the root of the administrative installation point.

You can customize how Setup installs Internet Explorer by running the Internet Explorer Administration Kit (Ieak5.exe) from the IE5\Language folder located in the root of Office Disc 1 or in the root of the Office administrative installation point.

Software prerequisites

No other software needs to be installed before you install Internet Explorer. If an earlier version of Internet Explorer exists on the user’s computer, IE5Setup upgrades it to Internet Explorer 5.

Elevated privileges

To install Internet Explorer on Windows NT 4.0 you must run IE5Setup with elevated privileges. You must be logged on with elevated privileges both before and after reboot.

Note   Because IE5Setup is not a Windows installer application, you cannot advertise Internet Explorer 5, and the /j command-line option is not recognized.

Reboot requirements

IE5Setup requires you to reboot the computer after you install Internet Explorer. You must log on again using the same account so that IE5Setup can finish the installation.
