How to Install Office Server Extensions

Microsoft Office Server Extensions (OSE) Setup is a separate application from Office 2000 Setup. If you have Microsoft Office 2000 Professional, the OSE Setup application is named Setupse.exe, and it is located in the root folder on Microsoft Office 2000 Disc 1. If you have Office 2000 Premium, the OSE Setup application is named Setupse.exe, and it is located in the root folder on Microsoft Office 2000 Disc 3. Like Office 2000 Setup, OSE Setup uses Windows installer technology.

If you have Office 2000 Premium, you can start OSE Setup by clicking Install Microsoft Office Server Extensions on the Microsoft Office 2000 panel that appears when you insert Office Disc 3. If you have Office 2000 Professional, run Setupse.exe, which is located in the root folder on Office Disc 1.

Specify installation location

After entering your name and organization, and then accepting the licensing agreement, you specify the folder where OSE Setup installs OSE files. The default location is C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office.

OSE Setup installs the following items on your server:

• OSE Start Page and supporting content
• OSE Administration Home page and supporting content
• Microsoft FrontPage 2000 Server Extensions
• Microsoft Data Engine (MSDE)
• OSE files

Note   OSE also runs with Microsoft SQL Server version 6.5 or later, instead of MSDE. However, you cannot use MSDE if you have any version of Microsoft SQL Server installed on the local computer. If you have Microsoft SQL Server installed on your computer, and you wish to instead use MSDE, you must remove SQL Server before installing MSDE.

Install OSE files

When you click Install Now, OSE Setup copies the OSE files to your hard disk. If Setup detects any version of SQL Server installed on the local computer, OSE Setup does not install MSDE.

After OSE Setup, you must complete the OSE Configuration Wizard to configure the settings for OSE. When OSE Setup is completed, it starts the wizard. It is recommended that you complete the wizard immediately after OSE Setup because you cannot use OSE features until you complete the wizard. However, you can exit the wizard and complete it at a later time. Until OSE is fully configured, the wizard automatically runs every time you log on to your Web server interactively.

Use SQL Server with OSE

OSE can use MSDE or SQL Server to store Web Discussions and Web Subscriptions data. MSDE is included with OSE. If you want to use SQL Server, you must install it separately.

Using an existing SQL Server has the following advantages:

• OSE data can be administered along with data in other databases on your SQL Server. No new administration processes are needed.
• OSE data is protected by the backup strategy that you have in place on the SQL Server.
• The SQL Server reduces the processing time and storage required on your Web server that is running OSE.

Tip   If you do not have a SQL Server available on your network, and your only storage needs are for OSE, use MSDE to simplify your administrative tasks. MSDE can be easily installed by default along with OSE.

Prevent installation of Microsoft Data Engine

IF MSDE is installed on a computer, you cannot use that computer to connect to a remote SQL Server. To connect to a remote SQL Server, to save hard disk space, or to free memory and CPU time on a Web server that is running OSE, you can prevent OSE Setup from installing MSDE.

To install OSE without MSDE

• If you have Office 2000 Premium, insert Office Disc 3, open a command prompt, change to the CD-ROM drive, and then type the following command:

  setupse.exe /nd

  – or –

  If you have Office 2000 Professional, insert Office Disc 1, open a command prompt, change to the CD-ROM drive, and then type the following command:

  setupse.exe /nd

Note   If you have Microsoft SQL Server installed on the same computer on which you are installing OSE, you do not need to follow this procedure because OSE Setup detects the local SQL Server installation and does not install MSDE.

Run OSE Setup in quiet mode

In a text file, you can specify all the information that OSE Setup needs and then run OSE Setup in quiet mode. Quiet mode does not require any user interaction to complete OSE Setup, so it is convenient when you need to configure several Web sites at one time. By using quiet mode, you can develop a standard installation configuration that you can apply to several computers, while defining the OSE Setup parameters only once.

To run OSE Setup in quiet mode

1. If you have Office 2000 Premium, insert Office Disc 3, open a command prompt, change to the CD-ROM drive, and then type the following command:

   setupse.exe /q [LOGFILE=logfilepath] [BINROOT=installpath]

   – or –

   If you have Office 2000 Professional, insert Office Disc 1, open a command prompt, change to the CD-ROM drive, and then type the following command:

   setupse.exe /q [LOGFILE=logfilepath] [BINROOT=installpath]

   where logfilepath is the folder path to the log file containing installation settings, and installpath is the folder path where OSE files are installed.

   Note   If you do not specify the LOGFILE switch, OSE Setup defaults to the Cfgquiet.ini file on the CD-ROM in the PFiles\MSOffice\Office folder. If you do not specify the BINROOT switch, OSE files are installed to the Windows NT disk in the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office folder.

2. To confirm that OSE Setup is completed, run Task Manager, and then on the Processes tab, check for Setupse.exe.
3. Restart the computer.

The log file you use when running OSE Setup in quiet mode is a text file with sections that contain entries and values. The log file included on the CD establishes default settings for OSE, and you can copy the file to a writeable location and modify it to meet your needs. To create the log file, start with the Cfgquiet.ini file that is included with OSE, and modify the file with a text editor such as Notepad.

Cfgquiet.ini is located in the PFiles\MSOffice\Office folder on:

• Office Disc 1 in Office 2000 Professional
• Office Disc 3 in Office 2000 Premium

If you have already installed Office 2000, Cfgquiet.ini is located in the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office folder.
