System Requirements for Office Server Extensions

Before installing Microsoft Office Server Extensions (OSE) on your Web server, make sure that you have installed the required hardware and software.

The following table identifies the minimum and recommended hardware requirements for OSE.

Software requirements

To run OSE, you must first install the following software on your server:

• Microsoft Windows® 2000 Premium or Server edition.

  – or –

  Microsoft Windows NT® Server version 4.0 with Service Pack 4 or later, or Windows NT Workstation version 4.0 with Service Pack 4 or later.

• Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) version 4.0 or later with the World Wide Web service installed (Windows NT Server or Windows 2000 Server).

  – or –

  Microsoft Personal Web Server (Windows NT Workstation or Windows 2000 Premium).

  Although configurations based on both IIS 4.0 and Personal Web Server are supported, only IIS 4.0 provides full support for the OSE server properties.

  Note   Optionally, you can install the IIS Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) service to use with the Web Subscriptions feature on your OSE-extended web. If you do not want to use the Web Subscriptions feature, or if you have a separate SMTP mail server, then you do not need to install the IIS SMTP service.

• Microsoft Internet Explorer version 4.01 or later.
• Microsoft Exchange Server or other SMTP mail server (optional).

  You can use the Internet Mail Service feature of Exchange Server as your SMTP mail server to support the Web Subscriptions feature. In fact, you can use any mail server that supports SMTP — including the IIS SMTP service.

Note   OSE does not support the plug-in language features of the Microsoft Office 2000 MultiLanguage Pack. OSE features are displayed in the installation language only. Multilanguage functionality is supported only on Microsoft Office 2000 client systems.
