Office XP Systems Requirements
The system requirements for Microsoft Office XP depend upon the Office suite you are installing and upon whether you are deploying the software on a client computer, an administrative server, or a Windows Terminal Services server. A stand-alone computer will run well with the minimum requirements, for example, while an administrative server supporting thousands of desktops will require more processor power, memory, and hard-disk capacity.
Note None of the Office XP suites will run on the Microsoft Windows® 3.x, Microsoft Windows NT® 3.5x, or Microsoft Windows 95 operating systems. If your computers are currently running one of these operating systems, you must upgrade the operating system before installing Office XP.
The following sections present recommendations on the minimum system requirements for the different Office XP suites.
Office XP and Internet Explorer
All versions of Office XP require an installation of Microsoft Internet Explorer to be on the computer because Office applications take advantage of services provided by the browser. Office uses these Internet Explorer services behind the scenes, however, so there is no requirement that Internet Explorer be set as the default browser on the computer.
By default, Office XP installs Internet Explorer 5.01 at the same time as it installs the System Files Update. (Office will not install Internet Explorer on Microsoft Windows 2000, Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Windows Me), or higher operating system versions since those operating systems already have Internet Explorer 5.01 or above.) If you prefer to stay with an earlier version of Internet Explorer, you can turn off the default installation through Setup or the Custom Installation Wizard. Office XP requires as a minimum Internet Explorer 4.01 with Service Pack 1 (the version first released with Microsoft Windows 98). Any later version of Internet Explorer will work correctly with Office XP.
Note If you are running Office XP on Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 6, you should confirm that Internet Explorer has been upgraded to at least version 4.01 with Service Pack 1.
If you are currently running Windows 2000 on your computers, and you want to upgrade to Internet Explorer 5.5 at the same time as you upgrade to Office XP, you must upgrade the browser separately from your Office XP deployment; the installation of the these two products cannot be chained together. Internet Explorer 5.5 can be deployed either before or after you deploy Office XP.
Office XP product suites
Office XP is available in several product suites, each of which contains a different collection of applications and services. Any of the suites can be installed on stand-alone computers or deployed throughout your organization from an administrative installation point.
The following sections describe the system requirements for each suite.
Microsoft Office XP Standard
Microsoft Office XP Standard includes the following applications:
- Microsoft Excel
- Microsoft Word
- Microsoft Outlook®
- Microsoft PowerPoint®
Core system requirements
To use Microsoft Office XP Standard, users’ computers must meet the following requirements:
Processor Pentium 133 MHz or higher processor required for all operating systems.
Operating system Microsoft Windows 98, Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition, or Windows Millennium; Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 6 or greater; Microsoft Windows 2000. The recommended operating system is Windows 2000 Professional.
On systems running Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 6, the version of Internet Explorer must be upgraded to at least Internet Explorer 4.01 with Service Pack 1.
Memory Memory requirements for Office XP Standard depend upon the operating system used with the computer. Operating system RAM requirements assume default Windows installations; running additional utilities or applications may require additional RAM.
- For Windows 98 and Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition, 24 MB of RAM for the operating system, plus an additional 8 MB of RAM for each application running simultaneously.
- For Windows Millennium and Windows NT Workstation or Server 4.0 or later, 32 MB of RAM for the operating system, plus an additional 8 MB of RAM for each application running simultaneously.
- For Windows 2000 Professional, 64 MB of RAM recommended minimum. For Windows 2000 Server or Advanced Server, 256 MB of RAM recommended minimum. In addition, you should have 8 MB of RAM for each application running simultaneously.
Hard-disk space Numbers indicate typical installation; your hard-disk usage will vary depending on configuration. Custom installation choices may require more or less hard-disk space.
- 210 MB of available hard-disk space is required for the default configuration of Office XP Standard.
- Users without Windows 2000, Windows Millennium, or Office 2000 SR-1 will need an extra 50 MB of hard-disk space for the System Files Update.
- On computers where Office XP is installed on a different drive than the operating system, the operating system drive should have 115 MB of available hard-disk space.
- For international deployments, you should allow an extra 50 MB of hard-disk space for each additional language interface you install.
Registry space Under Windows NT and Windows 2000, at least 4 MB of space must be available in the registry.
Disk drives CD-ROM drive.
Monitor VGA or higher-resolution monitor; Super VGA recommended.
Pointing device Microsoft Mouse, Microsoft IntelliMouse®, or compatible pointing device.
Additional requirements for specific features
Some Office XP Standard edition features have additional requirements:
Modem 9600 baud modem; 14,400 or higher baud recommended.
Multimedia Multimedia computer required for sound and other multimedia effects. A hardware-accelerated video card or MMX processor will provide improved graphical rendering performance.
E-mail Microsoft Exchange, Internet SMTP/POP3, IMAP4, or other MAPI-compliant messaging software.
Collaboration Microsoft Exchange Server required for certain advanced collaboration functionality in Microsoft Outlook.
Internet Some Internet functionality may require Internet access via a 14,400 or higher baud modem and payment of a separate fee to a service provider; local charges may apply.
Speech recognition Speech recognition technologies require a higher level of hardware support for the computer, as well as a microphone.
- For all operating systems, the recommended hardware requirements increase to a Pentium 400 MHz or higher processor and 128 MB of RAM.
- The recommended microphone is a high-quality, close-talk USB microphone that conforms to PC99 System Design Guide standards. If you are using a USB microphone, a sound card is not required, as audio processing is handled by the device itself.
- If you are using a conventional microphone, the unit should be a high quality close-talk headset that places the microphone within four inches of the speaker’s mouth. Conventional microphones should also conform to PC99 System Design Guide standards. A conventional microphone requires a sound card in the computer.
Handwriting Graphics tablet recommended for handwriting features.
PowerPoint broadcasts Windows Media Encoder–compatible video camera for broadcasts including video; Microsoft Exchange Chat server to enable chats during live broadcasts; Microsoft Windows Media Server to enable multicasts of live broadcasts to more than 10 audience members.
Microsoft Office XP Small Business
Microsoft Office XP Small Business includes the following applications:

- 445 MB of available hard-disk space is required for the default configuration of Office XP Developer (285 MB for Microsoft Office XP Professional with FrontPage, plus 160 MB for the Microsoft Office Developer Tools).
- In addition, hard-disk space is required for the Microsoft Office XP Developer system component update. The space required depends upon the operating system:
- 120 MB of hard-disk space is required on Windows NT 4.0 or later.
- 50 MB of hard-disk space is required on Windows 98, Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition, or Windows Millennium.
- 230 MB of hard-disk space is required on Windows 2000.
- Users without Windows 2000, Windows Millennium, or Office 2000 SR-1 will need an extra 50 MB of hard-disk space for the System Files Update.
- On computers where Office XP is installed on a different drive than the operating system, the operating system drive should have 115 MB of available hard-disk space.

The Workflow Service included with Office XP Developer can be used to develop workflow on 7.0, SQL Server 2000, or Exchange Server 2000. The minimum system requirements for any of these servers are as follows:
Processor Pentium I 166 MHz or compatible processor minimum; Pentium II 266 or greater recommended.
Operating system Windows 2000 server family.
Memory 128 MB of RAM minimum; 256 MB of RAM recommended.
Additional requirements for specific features
Some Office XP Developer edition features have additional requirements:

Enterprise editions of Office XP
In addition to the core applications, Enterprise editions of Office XP contain tools and functionality designed to support the deployment and support of Microsoft Office in organizations. Additional features of the Enterprise editions include the Office Resource Kit and built-in support for Office XP Multilingual User Interface Packs.
The system requirements for a given Enterprise edition are the same as for the associated regular edition. For example, the requirements for Office XP Professional Enterprise are the same as for Office XP Professional. The following Enterprise editions are available for Office XP:

Stand-alone Office XP applications
If you deploy a single Office XP application, such as Outlook or Word, the core requirements for the processor, RAM, and operating system will be the same as for the suites listed above. The hard-disk space requirements for a single application will be less than for a complete suite.
The following table lists the requirements for installing a single application on a computer. Because the applications in an Office suite share many files, the installation of a single application includes many files that would only be installed once for a complete suite. If you install multiple stand-alone applications, the footprint for the succeeding ones will usually be less than 40 MB.

The hard-disk space numbers indicate typical installation; your hard-disk usage will vary depending on configuration. Custom installation choices may require more or less hard-disk space.
- Users without Windows 2000, Windows Millennium, or Office 2000 SR-1 will need an extra 50 MB of hard-disk space for the System Files Update.
- On computers where Office XP is installed on a different drive than the operating system, the operating system drive should have 115 MB of available hard-disk space.
- For international deployments, you should allow an extra 50 MB of hard-disk space for each additional language interface you install.
Office administrative platform
If you are planning to deploy Office XP in an organization, the most efficient approach is to create an administrative installation point on a network server. The administrative installation point contains all of the Office XP application files, plus the configuration information and other resources you specify. Users connect to the share and run Setup to install a customized version of Office XP on their computers.
Microsoft Office XP supports most widely available network operating systems and network clients for file and printing services. Microsoft Office XP has been tested with the following network servers and clients.

Office XP and Windows Terminal Services
Windows Terminal Services is a technology that lets you run Office XP applications remotely on a Windows-based server from a client computer over a network connection. When Terminal Services is enabled, administrators do not have to install Office XP on each client computer. Instead, the application is installed once on the server, and the clients gain access to Office XP through terminal emulation.
When a user runs an application on a client computer using Terminal Services, all of the application execution takes place on the server. Only the keyboard, mouse, and display information is transmitted over the network. Each user is restricted to his or her individual session, which is managed transparently by the server operating system.
For the Windows 2000 platform, Terminal Services is an optional service available on the standard server, advanced server, and datacenter server versions. For the Windows NT 4.0 platform, remote services are supported with Windows NT Server 4.0, Terminal Server Edition.
Note Licensing is required when deploying a Terminal Services–enabled server as an application server. Each client, regardless of the type of operating system and protocol used to connect to Terminal Services, must have the Terminal Services Client Access License (CAL) as well as a Windows 2000 Server CAL. Each copy of Windows 2000 Professional includes a Terminal Services CAL, but not a Windows 2000 Server CAL. Customers with servers using earlier versions of Microsoft Windows NT, or with client computers using other operating systems, must purchase a Terminal Services CAL and a Windows 2000 Server CAL, or the appropriate upgrade licenses.
Core system requirements for Terminal Services
The following sections list the system requirements for Windows 2000 and Windows NT 4.0 servers running Terminal Services.
Windows 2000 Server
Processor Pentium 133 MHz or higher processor. Windows 2000 Server supports up to four CPUs on one machine.
Memory 256 MB of RAM recommended minimum (128 MB minimum supported; 4 gigabytes (GB) maximum).
Hard-disk space 2 GB hard disk with a minimum of 1.0 GB free space. (Additional free hard-disk space is required if you are installing over a network.)
Disk drives CD-ROM or DVD drive.
Monitor VGA or higher-resolution monitor; Super VGA recommended.
Pointing device Microsoft Mouse, Microsoft IntelliMouse, or compatible pointing device.
Windows 2000 Advanced Server
Processor Pentium 133 MHz or higher processor. Windows 2000 Advanced Server supports up to eight CPUs on one machine.

Core system requirements for client computers
Client computers use the Terminal Services Client software to manage communications between the client and the server running Office XP through Terminal Services. Each user that runs an application on Windows Terminal Server opens a separate instance of the application on the server, and all customizations are stored in a per-user storage area.
Client platforms that support Windows Terminal Services include the following:
- 32-bit Windows-based PCs running Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows Millennium, Windows NT 3.51, Windows NT 4.0, or Windows 2000 Professional
- 16-bit Windows-based PCs running Windows for Workgroups 3.11 with MS TCP/IP-32
- Windows CE–based terminals
- Windows CE–based Handheld Professional devices (H/PC Pro)
- Third-party software vendors such as Citrix provide clients for non-Windows platforms such as the Apple Macintosh, MS-DOS, and UNIX
