Upgrading with Input Method Editors

The Microsoft Office XP Multilingual User Interface Pack now includes Input Method Editors (IMEs) for the languages that you choose to install. If your organization uses IMEs, you can install and use any of the updated IMEs supplied with the Office XP Multilingual User Interface Pack (MUI Pack). If your organization uses a Global Input Method Editor instead, you can now use the editors provided with the MUI Pack or download the new replacement editor that works with Office XP.

Upgrading to Office XP with the Multilingual User Interface Pack could result in multiple Input Method Editors on your users' computers. Existing IMEs are not uninstalled by the Office installation process, but instead are unregistered from the Active keyboard during Office XP Setup. If Office XP is uninstalled later, on East Asian computers the older IMEs will become available again automatically.

To migrate with language-specific IMEs, install the MUI Pack languages that your organization needs. The corresponding IMEs will be installed automatically with the languages.

Note   If your users have Microsoft Windows® 2000, they must enable the language for the IME before installing the IME. To do this, go to Regional Options in Control Panel. Under the Language settings for the system area in the General tab, choose the language of the IME. This process will install the appropriate language support files.

If you currently use a Global Input Method Editor instead of a language-specific IME in your organization's environment, be aware that the Global Input Method Editor is no longer supported. If you install the MUI Pack, you no longer need a Global Input Method Editor.

If you choose to use a Global Input Method Editor in your organization (instead of installing the MUI Pack), you must download the new equivalent to the Global Input Method Editor, called the Web Downloadable Input Method Editor. Download and install this file before you update to Office XP. To download the Input Method Editor from the World Wide Web, see the Microsoft Office Web site at http://office.microsoft.com.
